About Me

Marissa Gandee

I founded Valinote Therapy in Washington, DC, with a clear mission: to create an affirming, compassionate space where 2SLGBTQIA+ individuals—especially lesbian and queer women—can fully be themselves.

The practice is named for my grandmother, Rita Valinote, a woman of remarkable strength who made the courageous decision to leave an abusive relationship to protect herself and her children. That legacy of courage, resilience, and choosing a different path forward is woven into everything Valinote Therapy represents.

As a member of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community, I understand many of the complexities that can come with navigating identity, relationships, and belonging in a world that doesn’t always reflect or affirm queer experiences. You won’t need to over-explain or educate me on the basics of your experience—but I’ll always approach your story with curiosity, care, and respect for what’s uniquely yours.

I believe therapy should be a space where you can show up authentically, without translation or performance, and begin to build a life that feels more aligned, grounded, and your own. I bring both lived experience and clinical training into this work, grounding our sessions in warmth, collaboration, and thoughtful care.

How I Work

We Collaborate

You are the expert in your life. My role is to support you in making sense of your experiences, clarifying what you want, and moving toward it—at a pace that feels right for you.

Grounded & Nonjudgmental

Support

Your path is your own, and healing is not linear. I follow your lead, listen closely, and bring clinical insight to support you in finding your way.

Real and Practical

Therapy doesn’t have to feel distant or clinical. I show up as a real person—present, engaged, and focused on insight and tools you can actually use.
